Thank you to all who have been in touch to communicate your recent travel information and cooperated so thoroughly and calmly with the guidance we have provided. To date, no members of the ASL community have tested positive for the virus.

Planning and risk management

Over the past week, the School’s Senior Leadership Team has conducted meetings with teachers, parents and students to resolve questions about trips, upcoming school events and contingency planning. Many have participated, and your feedback has been very helpful in the constant revision and updating of our risk analyses for future events. We will continue to communicate directly with those involved in the days ahead.

We have undertaken additional cleaning protocols on campus, focusing on high contact areas (i.e., doorknobs, push plates and handrails, etc.), as well as computer keyboards and mice. Hand sanitizer is available, and specific handwashing protocols are posted around the building. All students are regularly reminded about the importance of handwashing, and lower school students are supervised in their efforts.

Based on common sense and medical advice, we ask employees, students and parents to refrain from handshaking and other physical contact on campus whenever possible. We are also reviewing the future viability of large group meetings and will keep you posted about such events. Decisions will be made based on the expert advice of our safety and security consultants and recommendations from the NHS and Public Health England (PHE).

Information regarding our contingency planning in the event of school closure

Some have asked about the likelihood of a school closure. Our plan at this time is to remain open unless we are advised differently by the Department of Education and/or PHE. Current advice is that there is no benefit to closing at this time, and closure would not necessarily ensue should a member of our community be diagnosed with the virus. As I indicated in my last letter, if someone tests positive for COVID-19 at ASL, we would inform the community, and follow guidance from PHE, which would take over case management immediately.

We are, however, preparing for the possibility of a school closure, as it makes sense to be ready in these uncertain times. ASL has a Distance Learning Plan that would be put into action for any closure lasting more than four days. This plan includes all three divisions of the School and is currently being discussed with faculty and staff. The plan defines our philosophy and approach to distance learning and works to ensure continued delivery of teaching and learning for all.

The Distance Learning Plan will provide specific advice to families about:

Establishing routines and expectations for students

Defining a physical space for student study at home

Monitoring student and teacher communications

Daily check-ins with your children about their learning

Encouraging exercise and physical activity

Being aware of stress and concerns

Monitoring time spent online, either for school work or on social media

Keeping children social, but setting rules for social media interaction

In addition, the plan will include division-specific information about learning priorities and considerations, contact hours for faculty, and who to contact at ASL for questions and support.

If the School were to close, and/or groups of staff or students are required to stay at home, families and students would make use of our Schoology learning management system, email and the ASL website for distance learning. Therefore, ASL’s Distance Learning Plan requires access to a computer or tablet that is connected to the internet in order to access learning materials, contact teachers and to complete work. To support this, we may alter the laptop policies so that students in Grades 4-6 can take home ASL laptops to use for the duration of the school closure.

For lower school students, home-learning activities will be parent- or carer-supported, with the help of learning experiences developed and shared by their homeroom teachers. Our understanding is that most students have access to a personal device at home, whether their own or a shared family device. If this is not the case, families may request to checkout their child’s school laptop to take home for the duration of the school closure. Students will be asked to confirm they are able to access Schoology at home, and we will provide support if needed.

We appreciate that potential disruption to classes, AP exams and year-end exams will be a key concern, and exam preparation work will be given particular consideration in our planning.
