Although we may not always be able to see it, the air we breathe is changing. As CO2 levels rise, the impact on vulnerable groups and habitats around the world is becoming clearer by the day. And while research suggests that aerosol emissions can cool the planet's temperature, they are highly hazardous to humans and animals, and other effects are still unknown. <br>
<br>
A greener future must also mean cleaner skies, but how do we get there? For our session on Air we have brought together a panel of experts, historians and activists to address this and other urgent questions. Who is being adversely affected by urban air pollution? How do trees absorb excess CO2, and should we focus on preserving old trees or planting news ones? Will carbon capture and storage ever work at a meaningful scale? <br>

<strong>Speakers</strong><br>
<br>
<strong>Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah</strong> is the founder, director, and trustee of the Ella Roberta Foundation. She and her legal team made history when a Coroner found a direct link between her daughter’s death and the air quality near her home, 25 metres from the south circular, one of London’s busiest roads. She is one of the most prominent advocates for clean air worldwide, a powerful voice in the air pollution debate. Her work frequently involves lobbying politicians, as well as medical professionals, for more education and stronger legislation when it comes to air pollution. Rosamund is now a leading light in the global fight against air pollution, a position recognised by the World Health Organisation, who made her a BreatheLife Ambassador. She uses her experience and position to highlight the inequality of those affected by air pollution. She is also an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association and was named among <em>You Magazine</em> 21 Most Extraordinary Women of 2021, <em>British Vogue</em> 25 Extraordinary Women of 2021, <em>The Times </em>Green Power List 2021 and BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List 2020. <br>

<strong>Kate Elliot </strong>is head of Rathbone Greenbank’s ethical, sustainable and impact research team. She oversees the development and implementation of the team’s sustainability assessment framework, analysing investments against a range of environmental, social and governance criteria. She also monitors emerging sustainability themes, sets priorities for Greenbank’s stewardship and engagement activities and has developed the team’s systems for the measurement and reporting of portfolio sustainability and impact performance. In addition, she sits on the Responsible Investment Committee for Rathbones. Kate joined Rathbones in 2007 after graduating from the University of Bristol with a Masters in Philosophy and Mathematics.<br>

<strong>Jared Farmer</strong> is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. A former Andrew Carnegie Fellow, he is the author of several books, including <em>On Zion’s Mount</em>, which won the Francis Parkman Prize. He lives in Philadelphia. In his new book, <em>Elderflora: A Modern History of Ancient Trees</em>, Farmer surveys the complex history of the world’s oldest trees, including voices of Indigenous peoples, religious figures, and contemporary scientists who study elderflora in crisis. In a changing climate, a long future is still possible, Farmer shows, but only if we give care to young things that might grow old.<br>

<strong>Gabrielle Walker</strong>, Founder and Director of Valence Solutions, is an expert strategist, speaker and moderator focused on unleashing capitalism on climate change. She works with global companies at boardroom-level, analysing emerging trends, challenging conventional thinking and driving meaningful action. Gabrielle gives keynote addresses to corporate audiences around the world and is an accomplished moderator of high-level debates. She has presented many BBC TV and radio programmes, was Climate Change Editor at <em>Nature</em> and Features Editor at <em>New Scientist</em>, has written extensively for many international newspapers and magazines including the <em>FT</em>, the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> and the <em>New York Times</em>, and has authored four books. She has a PhD from Cambridge University and has taught at both Cambridge and Princeton.<br>
