REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Every year, the nation unites on Remembrance Sunday to honour those who have sacrificed themselves to protect our freedoms. Traditionally this sees a wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph followed by a procession along Whitehall by members of our armed forces. Due to coronavirus restrictions, this year’s ceremony will be closed to members of the public.
Westminster residents are instead encouraged to remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to take part in a national moment of silence at home tomorrow at 11:00am.
Full details of the ceremony are available here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/remembrance-sunday-2020?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a35d80332c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a35d80332c-40059651) .

JOURNEY OF THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR: Wednesday 11 November marks the centenary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey, an extraordinarily poignant and significant event that represented the sacrifice of all those who lost their lives in the Great War. This has particular resonance for us in Westminster as the body of the Unknown Warrior was brought from France to Victoria Station and from there followed a ceremonial route through the streets of Westminster, to be interred in the Abbey “amongst the kings and queens”.
To commemorate this centenary, we have worked with the Military Wives Choirs to re-recorded Abide with Me, a hymn sung at the funeral. The song will be released today accompanied by a music video (click the image above to watch) and documentary telling the story of the Unknown Warrior and capturing their final journey through Whitehall to Westminster Abbey. For more information, please visit our website (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/unknownwarrior100?utm_source=MyWestminster+Updates&utm_campaign=a35d80332c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2020_03_22_10_27_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_bd2a0fcc47-a35d80332c-40059651) .
50 REASONS TO BE JOYFUL: Almost 50 weddings were rearranged at Old Marylebone Town Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday, before lockdown restrictions began on Thursday.
For the whole month of November, Old Marylebone Town Hall had 200 ceremonies booked and on Wednesday, 27 ceremonies were rearranged, taking place between 8am and 11pm. Jude Arubi and Nandy Luke (above) were one of the last couples to get married before lockdown restrictions began.
Jude said about their last minute wedding: “It got cancelled the first time. It was going to get cancelled again so we had the opportunity and we went for it.” Nandy said: “We did get the call and they were happy to squeeze us in at the last minute so we’re very appreciative about that.”
The Westminster Registration Service is currently open for birth and death registrations and for notices of intention to marry or form a civil partnership appointments only.
