Beat the cold snap

Hello,

Cold weather alerts are now in place all over the UK. As temperatures continue to drop below zero degrees, your pipes may be at risk of freezing.

Frozen water can crack even the strongest pipe and cause a leak. That’s why it’s important to take precautions, especially if your home or workplace is empty right now.

Act now to beat the cold snap and protect against burst pipes in your property. Just follow our cold weather tips:

* Locate your stop tap in case of emergency
Stop the flow of water if a pipe does burst.
* Lag your external pipes
Take steps to protect your pipes while it’s freezing outside.
* Keep your heating on
Help keep pipes flowing, even if you aren’t home.

How will I know if my pipes freeze, and what should I do if they do?
Frozen pipes will often have a light coating of frost on the outside. The water from your taps may also slow down to a trickle.

If you think a pipe is frozen, try using a wrapped hot water bottle or warm towels to help thaw it out slowly and safely.

If a pipe cracks or bursts, use your stop tap to turn off your water straight away. To put things right, call a qualified plumber or check whether your home insurance company covers pipes.
