NOISE CAMERAS HELPING STAMP OUT ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR: The latest tool in our fight against anti-social behaviour in Westminster is already seeing results (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-councils-new-noise-cameras-support-police-operation-tackling-car-meets) . The installation of acoustic cameras in key parts of the city has led to a successful operation cracking down on dangerous driving. Police were able to use the above footage to make five arrests and seize ten vehicles (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/westminster-councils-new-noise-cameras-support-police-operation-tackling-car-meets) and issue nearly 40 section 59 warnings. This came after residents’ complaints about the noise when 100 cars had gathered along Exhibition Road earlier this month to perform the dangerous driving manoeuvres in the early hours.
ARE SHORT-TERM LETS AFFECTING YOU? Short-term lets are where homeowners rent a property or room on a nightly basis or over one or two days. Westminster City Council absolutely supports responsible short-term letting. We are taking the lead in doing all we can to crack down on irresponsible owners and we strongly believe that this must be done in a way that also protects the interests of our residents. We are looking for new powers to help us and a forthcoming government consultation on this issue is of great importance.
While some properties are let responsibly, a large number are not and these result in noise, illegal dumping, anti-social behaviour and, at its worst, criminal activity. If you’ve been impacted by short-term lets in your neighbourhood, we want to hear from you about your experiences (mailto:communications at westminster.gov.uk?subject=Short-Term%20Lets) . However, please make sure to use the Report-It tool on our website (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/report-it) to make our officers aware of any instances happening right away.

BRINGING JOBS TO THE HEART OF LONDON: With the lifting of Plan B restrictions, we are embarking on a major investment in the heart of London, including a £1m fund to train the hospitality staff of the future. Open to businesses from upmarket hotels to small family cafes, this fund will support training for a variety of roles – from restaurant front of house to barista and sommelier to sous chef. Westminster is home to 3,700 restaurants, bars and cafes which support around 80,000 jobs in the City.
This is thought to be the first initiative of its kind ever run by a UK local authority and residents such as Shahin (featured in the above video (https://youtu.be/_xI0F8IU-uY) ) are benefitting directly through traineeships at locations such as The Londoner Hotel in Leicester Square.

Cllr Rachael Robathan, Leader of Westminster City Council (pictured above visiting trainees at The Londoner), said: “Hospitality is a big employer in Westminster, supporting around 80,000 jobs – with more restaurants, bars and pubs than any other local authority. The £1m training fund we have announced gives young people growing up in Westminster a chance to enter the jobs market with the right skills for hospitality – from front of house in a big hotel to the pace of a busy kitchen. I met some young people at a West End hotel recently who have benefited from our Kickstart scheme and it is clear that there are great careers on our doorstep. I hope this fund will help our young people find them.”

CATCH UP ON OPEN FORUM: Our thanks to everyone that attending our latest Open Forum (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/about-council/open-forum?fbclid=IwAR3sKRDTwW7avwj_QZI-6Qvht3LyCsVVqZgk6i3kwhgoZiGnDUqd578fi64) yesterday evening, both in person at The Abbey Centre and online. Cllr Robathan was joined by Cllr James Spencer, Cabinet Member for City Management, Cllr David Harvey, Cabinet Member for Housing, Chief Executive of the council, Stuart Love, and Dr Amy Jones, Director of Environment for the council. The focus for the forum was on how we can tackle the climate emergency together and the panel fielded a host of questions on everything from the expansion of our food waste recycling programme to making our buildings more energy efficient. HELP WITH RISING COSTS: We know that many people are worried about the rising cost of living in 2022, including with energy bills. We want to provide as much support as possible to our residents and have a range of practical advice (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/advice-and-financial-help-residents) to help.
** Public Health Updates
------------------------------------------------------------
RETURN TO PLAN A: The previous Plan B measures in England (https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus) have now been lifted. You are no longer being asked to work from home, it is no longer a requirement to wear a face covering (although they are still encouraged in crowded spaces), and you no longer have to show your NHS COVID Pass at venues and events. In addition, restrictions put in place to slow the spread of Omicron in adult social care will be eased from Monday 31 January:
* Unlimited visiting for care home residents will return.
* Care home self-isolation periods will be reduced from 14 days to 10 days.
* Isolation periods following an emergency hospital visit will be reduced.

PLAN AHEAD FOR YOUR NEXT COVID-19 VACCINE: If you’ve tested positive for COVID-19, you can get vaccinated from 28 days (four weeks) after testing positive. 12 to 15-year-olds should wait 12 weeks to have the vaccine after testing positive for COVID-19. To book your next vaccine use the online NHS booking service (https://bit.ly/3tKkjVd) or call 119 free of charge. Find your closest vaccination centre in Westminster (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/walk-vaccinations-available-westminster) .
IMPENDING CHANGES FOR TRAVEL TESTING: Changes to travel testing requirements will be coming in from next month. From Monday 3 February, 12 to 15-year-olds will be able to access the digital NHS COVID Pass for international travel. From 11 February:
* double-vaccinated travellers arriving in the UK will no longer have to take a post-arrival lateral flow test (LFT) on Day 2.
* unvaccinated travellers will no longer have to take a Day 8 test or self-isolate, although a pre-departure and a post-arrival PCR test will still be needed.
Fully vaccinated people arriving in England must currently pre-book and take a post-arrival test from a private supplier. Read the full guidance on the GOV.UK website (https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-open-for-travel-with-all-restrictions-removed-for-eligible-vaccinated-arrivals)
