REMEMBERING THE FALLEN: The Lord Mayor of Westminster, Leader of Westminster City Council, Deputy Chief Executive of Westminster City Council, and the council’s Armed Forces Champion today marked Armistice Day at City Hall with a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a two-minute silence at the Great War Memorial. The memorial commemorates the 82 Westminster City Council staff members who lost their lives in the First World War. The Lord Mayor also paid tributes at Westminster Abbey alongside Her Majesty the Queen Consort.
Our residents have also been paying tribute, such as community members from the Abbey Centre who made poppies and displayed them in the windows of the centre (see below), dedicating them to those they’ve lost.

JOIN US IN PAYING TRIBUTE: Events are also taking place throughout the city to honour the occasion. At Westminster Abbey, the 94th Field of Remembrance, a field of poppies, remains open to the public until Sunday 20 November. On Sunday 13 November, there’s a service taking place at Lancaster Gate as part of the ‘Poppies to Paddington’ initiative, and an Animals in War service – also on the Sunday – taking place at the Park Lane Central Reservation, remembering the animals that also gave their lives in service.

In the above videos, Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Ormsby (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWsZUVmYXls) talks about the importance of honouring Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday, while the Lord Mayor, Cllr Hamza Taouzzale invites you to join the national two-minute silence (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti_K5qgPTFk) this Sunday at 11am in tribute to those who lost their lives fighting for their country.

PILOTS OF THE CARIBBEAN: To mark Armistice Day, we welcomed Peter Devitt to City Hall, a Royal Air Force curator who shared stories of the 6,000 Black Caribbeans who volunteered for the RAF. The film ‘Flying for Britain’ was shown, telling the story of Johnny Smythe from Sierra Leone who served in the RAF during the Second World War.

A FAIRER APPROACH TO GAMBLING: We’ve set up new measures to protect the most vulnerable from gambling (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/news/new-measures-protect-most-vulnerable-gambling-westminster) throughout Westminster, putting safeguards in place to protect resident and visitors. The policy focuses on protecting those most at risk and is the first of its kind in the UK. In the above video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjBybliTMHU) , Councillor Aicha Less, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection, outlines why our approach strikes a balance between the needs of supporting the economy and resident safety.

CREATING A FAIRER ENVIRONMENT: We’ve announced a series of Fairer Westminster initiatives including the Environmental Justice Measure (EJM) (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/environmental-justice-measure) – a tool for better understanding the impacts of climate change on local areas. The EJM shows the distribution of green, sustainable resources across the city, and gives residents information about reducing negative impacts. It’s a vital component in our Fairer Environment strategy and will help us become a net zero city by 2040. Find out more details, as well as view an interactive map (pictured above) (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/environmental-justice-measure) .

HELP US TO SHAPE YOUR CITY: There are lots of ways to get involved with council activity and to have your say in the way we build a Fairer Westminster (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/fairer-westminster) . We have many surveys, consultations, ballots and conversations underway that your thoughts and opinions can help us to develop further. These include:
* Church Street Ballot – We’re giving Church Street residents a say on what happens to the future of their estates. The Resident Ballot for Sites A, B and C opens on Monday 28 November. Find out more here (http://www.churchstreet.org/) .
* Community Charter for Participation – One way to ensure your voices are at the heart of what we do is by helping us create a charter that defines how we work with our communities to create a Fairer Westminster. Find out how you can help us shape this here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/charter-community-participation-consultation) .
* Westminster Together – Cllr Adam Hug will be hosting a community conversation at Regent Hall, 275 Oxford Street from 6.30pm on Wednesday 23 November. This is a great way to raise any specific issues you and your neighbourhood are facing. Register to attend in-person (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/westminster-together-in-person-event-tickets-450457599807?aff=mailchimp) or online (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/westminster-together-online-registration-450457278847?aff=mailchimp) .

There are many more ways to get involved with the council, from the Landlords Forum to consultations on Anti-Social Behaviour. Find full details here (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/about-council/consultations) .
GET INVOLVED IN FUTURE FULL COUNCIL MEETINGS: One of our Fairer Westminster aims is to create more ways for residents to give us feedback, this includes having residents bring questions and ideas to future Full Council meetings. We’d like your ideas on the best way to achieve this (https://forms.office.com/r/D3j7wHJNyG) . Should anyone be able to ask a question or should those speaking have the support of others such as by collecting signatures? How far in advance should the sign up deadline be? What approach is most fair for deciding who gets to speak? Share your thoughts on these and other questions here (https://forms.office.com/r/D3j7wHJNyG) .
