THE FUTURE OF THE NATION’S HIGH STREET: Our plans for the future of Oxford Street are now open for consultation. We’re proposing an enhanced public space with wider footways, better seating, more trees and other greenery, attractive lighting, clearer signage and more direct vehicle routes. We want to hear your views, ideas and experiences of Oxford Street and would like you to get involved through our online survey or at one of the in-person workshops taking place until 31 August.

CELEBRATING A RICH AND DIVERSE CULTURE: South Asian Heritage Month runs from 18 July to 17 August and is a chance to celebrate cultures that have made a significant impact on the world. It raises the profile of South Asian heritage by representing the diversity of the world we live in now through celebration, commemoration and education of the arts and culture of these communities. We’re marking the month by showcasing what it is to be South Asian in the 21st century, while also reflecting on our past and how it has shaped us.
Celebrate the month with us (https://www.westminster.gov.uk/south-asian-heritage-month)

UPDATES FROM WEEKEND TWO OF THE CITIZENS’ CLIMATE ASSEMBLY: In the final weekend of the in-person sessions, participants worked together to finalise a set of recommendations in response to the Assembly’s questions – How can we overcome the main barriers to Westminster becoming a net zero city by 2040 together? How do we ensure this is delivered in the fairest way? Volunteers from the group worked to further refine the assembly’s draft vision statements and principles that were brainstormed during weekend one. This was then shared with the room for wider voting to agree the adoption of the assembly’s vision and principles.

CLEANING GREENER: This week, we saw the full-scale rollout of the UK’s largest electric refuse collection fleet. These are the next generation of electric Refuse Collection Vehicles and are powered directly by energy generated from the waste they collect. We have invested £20m in the 45 new zero emission trucks which will be introduced over the coming weeks in a ground-breaking initiative that will reduce vehicle noise, cut air pollution and drastically reduce the city’s carbon emissions.

OUT AND ABOUT: Our street teams continue to work tirelessly to keep Westminster’s streets clean, tidy and safe. Recently our staff have dealt with abandoned dockless bikes blocking pathways, fly tipping at locations such as Greek Street, Little Venice and Harrow Road, cleaning up graffiti around Marble Arch, and even installing new seating at Maida Hill market. Make sure to let us know what needs attending to in your area via our Report It tool.

BE ALERT TO MEASLES: Measles is highly contagious and can lead to complications which require hospital treatment. Vaccines are our best line of defence and we’re calling on all parents and carers to make sure their children are up to date with their two MMR doses. If you’re not sure if your child is up to date, please check their Red Book or speak to your GP. It’s never too late to catch up, and you can get the MMR vaccine for free on the NHS whatever your age.
