CHRISTMAS DREAMS TO COME TRUE FOR THE WEST END: The West End is preparing for a Christmas to remember. Sales are predicted to rise by 7% to return to pre-pandemic levels, as shoppers and visitors are ready for a Christmas Cracker of a year. Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster City Council, said: “Across the West End, the buzz is back after the lean years of lockdown. Footfall is up across our famous shopping areas and Oxford Street is on a roll.”

DODGY TRADERS CAUGHT RED PAWED: Our trading standards team recently seized almost £10,000 worth of counterfeit Paddington Bear merchandise ahead of the new film’s release. Some of the items seized included t-shirts, tote bags, fridge magnets and even shot glasses - all emblazoned with the image of Westminster’s famous furry character, and now safely off our high streets.

THE ART IS FREE, AND SO ARE THE ARTISTS: On Friday 18 October, Westminster City Council and Hestia marked Anti-Slavery Day by pausing the iconic Piccadilly Lights for 10 minutes to display artwork created by survivors of modern slavery. The art is part of an annual ‘Art is Freedom’ exhibition which was also on display at Trafalgar Square, Waterloo Station and Victoria Station. One of the survivor-artists said: “This experience has given me so much power. I found so many talented people there in the groups, no matter what we have experienced. And I am so happy to see more people are getting helped to build up their lives again.”

Join us from 10am to 4pm on Friday 1 November at Sainsbury’s 2 Canal Way, and on Wednesday 6 November at Churchill Gardens Estate. No appointment needed.

IMPROVING HEALTH IN THE CITY: Where we live, work, and grow affects our health. Nearly half of Westminster’s residents are from the Global Majority (ethnic groups other than white British), who often face higher rates of preventable conditions like diabetes and hypertension. We are working with Global Majority residents and community groups to understand these health challenges and create a healthier future for all.
