CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL TRADERS AND PEDICAB OFFENDERS: Working alongside Lambeth Council and the Met Police, we have secured over £20,000 in fines and charges against illegal street traders and unlicensed pedicab riders. From peanut sellers to repeat pedicab offenders, enforcement teams are stepping up efforts to keep public spaces safe and lawful.
* A shop on Charing Cross Road was hit with the largest fine of £3,382
* Nine pedicabs operators - several repeat offenders - have been hit with some of the biggest individual fines totalling £9,075
* Prosecutions for five unlicensed street traders operating on Westminster Bridge selling peanuts and balloons saw £11,127.50 in fines awarded

GREEN FLAG AWARD: We’re excited to announce Strand Aldwych has earned a Green Flag Award! It recognises this amazing part of our city as an accessible green space. Located at the heart of this pedestrianised area is St Mary Le Strand church, also known as the Jewel in the Strand. It was designed by LDA Design and reopened by the council in December 2022.

FRANKENSTEIN VISITS PIMLICO ACADEMY: As part of Donmar Theatre’s School Tour, Pimlico Academy students enjoyed a live performance of Frankenstein Adjusts His Ring Light (And Then Starts Dancing), followed by a Q&A with the cast and crew. Pimlico is one of eight Westminster schools taking part, with over 2,000 students set to benefit. The tour, supported by the council, aims to inspire young people to explore careers in theatre, both on stage or behind the scenes.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS: Want to transform Little Venice with your art? We’re commissioning bold, permanent murals under two bridges along the canal. This is your chance to bring local stories to life and create something lasting for the community. The commission comes with a £50,000 design fee (plus VAT), and the final artwork will be installed in early 2026.

YOUTH COUNCIL CELEBRATES HERITAGE AND RESILIENCE: Westminster’s Youth Council hosted a powerful roundtable this week to showcase heritage, resilience, and community spirit. Held with the remote support of the Bangladeshi High Commissioner, Her Excellency Abida Islam, and First Secretary Nurani Rupoma, following Bangladesh’s National Day of Mourning after the aviation tragedy on 21 July. Youth Council attendees received heartfelt messages reinforcing the importance of cross-cultural connection, participated in a Q&A with local leaders on climate justice and mental health, and held a tribute to victims with a minute’s silence.

MEET SHOFA! As part of South Asian Heritage Month, we’re proud to celebrate our colleagues with South Asian heritage.

We’re spotlighting Shofa Miah, Strategic Manager for the Westminster Youth Council. She plays a key role in empowering young voices and advancing the Fairer Westminster Strategy.  Additionally, she co-chairs the Women’s Network, promoting inclusion across the organisation.

8K BOOST FOR PUPILS’ HEALTH AND WELLBEING: Twenty-five schools in Westminster have received up to £8,000 in grant funding to improve pupils’ health and wellbeing. This comes after a survey, covering topics such as emotional health and wellbeing, safety, food and diet and physical activity, collected responses from 1,357 pupils. The results have helped us understand what children need to improve their health and wellbeing and it has given schools a valuable insight into their pupils’ lives.
